Improve phone number service

Governments have failed to take responsibility for distributing phone numbers. We aim to raise awareness of this issue and encourage them to take action.
Security and safety are essential public services. One area in which governments have failed is identity protection.
Because of this, SIM swapping has become a dangerous method by which scammers gather enough personal information to convince a mobile service provider to transfer a victim’s phone number to a new SIM card under the scammers' control.
Once they have the phone number, scammers can intercept the verification codes sent via SMS that are often used for resetting passwords on email, social media, and banking accounts. This gives the scammer full access to these accounts.
Scammers increasingly use this technique to steal identities and commit financial fraud.

What should governments do!

  • Once again, local municipalities, not phone companies, should be responsible for handing out phone numbers to organizations and citizens.
This verifies the identity of the person or organization associated with a phone number.
  • There should be a public online birth year register for each country's calling code.
This allows anyone to verify the age of the person associated with a registered phone number. It enables legislators to restrict certain services to people above a certain age while protecting privacy.
